Anatomy of a Fall (2023)

directed by Justin Triet.

So I finally watched the French crime thriller “Anatomy of a Fall.”. This is basically a courtroom drama, not a typical thriller movie. Director Justine Triet knew his job very well, indeed a great movie.

Once an American bishop Fulton J. Sheen said , “It takes three to make love, not two: You, your spouse, and God. Without God people only succeed in bringing out the worst in one another.

When her husband died of a fall from the top of their house, she was accused. Their visually impaired 11-year-old son Daniel is the only one who used to live with them and is being asked in trial to solve the puzzle of his father’s death.

Before going further, let’s see the characters and the circumstances. Successful German-born author Sandra and her French husband, aspiring writer Samuel live in France with their visually impaired 11 year’s old son Daniel.

One morning when Daniel came back from a walk he found his father’s dead body in front of the house. Daniel yelled and called for his mom Sandra. When Sandra came from inside the house she was shocked by what she was seeing and called the ambulance.

From then the movie starts Its journey. Throughout the whole movie, we want to know how he fell from the house, Is it a murder or a suicide? Interestingly, we won’t have a definitive answer even after the movie ends. All we can do is assume.

Let’s talk about the amazing screenplay. For courtroom dramas, what is most challenging is the screenplay. Here, the script was written by the director Justine Triet, and her husband Arthur Harari. They successfully illustrate their subtle yet deep script from page to screen.

Director and writer Justin Triet shows the complex controversy of marriage and more in Anatomy Of A Fall. Sandra Hüller as Sandra Voyter was outstanding, she truly ruled the role. Sooth to say a great courtroom drama it is, with a wonderful screenplay, won the best original screenplay at Oscar 2024.
