Moonstruck (1987)

Director: Norman Jewison

Do you ever watch a movie that gives you the feeling that you are reading a poem? If you don’t, watch Moonstruck. As a poem is hard to describe, so is Moonstruck. You can feel it, you can think about it, and you can talk about it, but you better not make the audacity to describe it! So let’s talk about Moonstruck.

Moonstruck is kind of a movie that has so many different plots. The movie starts when Loretta gets a marriage proposal from Johnny, her casual devotee, and she agrees to marry him. There was no such kind of serious “love” at all. After that, Johnny has to be in Sicily to see her dying mother that night. Before leaving, Johnny gave Loretta a task. Loretta has to invite Johnny’s brother, Ronny, with whom Johnny has a fight and hasn’t talked to him for five years. Loretta reaches out to Ronny to invite him, they meet, something happens, they fall in love, and the story begins. Loretta then has some sort of guilty feelings immediately after the night they made love to fall in love with her fiance’s brother.

Let’s move into Loretta’s family. Her parents have a sweet love story but now they’re like old to each other. Loretta’s father Cosmo sees another woman and goes to an opera with her when they accidentally meet Loretta and Ronny with each other. Meanwhile, Loretta’s mother Rose was in a restaurant and met with a guy much younger than her age. They had some conversations, for real.

The movie has a bunch of the best dialogues and poetic scenes. Director Norman Jewison emphasizes the moon very well on Moonstruck. These two scenes where Loretta says to Ronny ‘I’ve never seen a moon like that” and Loretta’s uncle Frank says to her wife Rita, “It’s Cosmos moon” will last forever. Here is a dialogue Ronny says to Loretta-

“Love don’t make things nice. It ruins everything, it breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren’t here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect, the stars are perfect. Not us! Not us!”

Cher was amazing as Loretta. She acted very nice. It was a real pleasure to see her as Loretta. Nicolas Cage was also good as Ronny and Olympia Dukakis as Rose (Loretta’s mother) is a special mention.

In a nutshell

Moonstruck is a romantic comedy movie with intertwining plots. Characters are precisely placed, scenes are neatly poetic, dialogues are classically beautiful and apparently worth watching.
