The Bodyguard (1992)

Director: Mick Jackson

Some people think this is an underrated movie, while others think it is overrated. The Bodyguard is considered one of the most romantic movies as well as the most controversial one of the 90s. Well, not only in the 90s, I think The Bodyguard is one of the most romantic thriller movies of all time, but in a different way! So what’s in the story of The Bodyguard?

In short and easy, The Bodyguard is a love story of a famous female pop singer and her bodyguard.

The story begins when the famous singer Rachel starts to get death threats. Her manager goes to Farmer, a former secret service agent, to hire him as a bodyguard for the singer. When Farmer goes to the singer’s house, he discovers the big luxurious house where the singer lives with her 8-year-old son and with her sister. The fact that Rachel doesn’t get to know about the death threats in the very first place.

Farmer, the bodyguard, has a past. Once he was the bodyguard of Ronald Reagan, with whom he got involved. Farmer blames himself for Ronald’s death, as she got shot, though he was not at work that day as her bodyguard. So this time Farmer is careful not to get involved with Rachel.

As a bodyguard Farmer wants Rachel not to go everywhere because of her security issues but Rachel takes it as a barrier to her freedom and doesn’t want him meddling with her lifestyle. On the other hand, Farmer couldn’t go easy with her uncooperative client.

Eventually, their relationship takes to a new place, and they kind of fall in love with each other. What helps the most behind their relationship turnover is the psychology of their profession. There are only two dating scenes (kind of) in the whole movie, both of them are pretty much good. One of them is my favorite and most favorite scene from the movie and probably one of my most favorite movie scenes of all time. The other one is ‘the sword with the scarf’ scene. This also has Its own nobility.

Meanwhile, the death threats keep coming in. They couldn’t find any single clue about where the threats coming in.

Whitney Houston was perfect as Rachel Marron. The complexity of the character ‘Rachel’ was portrayed perfectly by Whitney. The sweet smiley Rachel and the alone inside Rachel combination was wonderful. Costner did also Justice to the character of Farmer. From the secret service agent turning into a strict bodyguard and the unconditional lover as well, the job was amazing.

In a Nutshell

The Bodyguard is kind of a thriller movie, I guess. Though romanticism is the theme of the movie, the whole movie was going through thrilling scenes. The background music was so good, especially the song “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston.
